Starting a business is like jumping out of a plane and hoping the parachute will open! I am one of the less common accountants in that I started my accountancy business from scratch. I went round collecting bags of receipts from my clients and did the whole job from beginning to end as well as the finance function, the marketing, the admin, the HR and everything else that goes into building a business. This makes me uniquely placed to speak to audiences about what it takes to start and build a business. I often say that if I wasn’t an accountant I may not have had the courage to start a business of my own as it is the tax side that would have worried me the most. Should I be a limited company or a sole trader? Do I need to register for VAT? How to I pay other people? What if I need to borrow money? Does my business need its own bank account? What bookkeeping software should I use? What expenses can I claim for? I answer all these questions and more in my presentations and workshops designed specifically for start up business. I have worked closely with Start Up Bromley, Start Up Croydon, Orpington and Bromley Colleges, The Start Up Show as well as many local networking organisations to share knowledge and expertise that encourages and supports entrepeuneurship in local communities. I can also combine these talks and workshops with the option of mentorship either individually or in groups to ensure attendees do not lose momentum when they come across the typical challenges that Start Ups face.
The timing can be tailored to specifically suit your event but I would recommend a minimum of 20 minutes to cover the basics.
This varies based on whether it is an online or an in person event, if in person then the location is of course relevant and also the length of time required for my attendance. Fees typically start at £200 and go up to around £1,000.
